Therapy Styles

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and proven effective in over 2,000 studies. It is a structured and time-sensitive approach that focuses on the present and helps individuals identify their most important goals while overcoming obstacles that hinder their progress. The primary aim of CBT is to help people not only get better but also maintain their improvements over time.

CBT is based on the cognitive model, which suggests that our thoughts and perceptions of a situation play a crucial role in shaping our emotional and behavioral reactions, rather than the situation itself. By targeting these thoughts and beliefs, CBT seeks to bring about positive changes in mood, functioning, and overall well-being.

A central aspect of CBT involves helping clients clarify their life goals and develop strategies to move towards achieving them. Through the acquisition of skills, individuals learn to modify their thinking patterns and behaviors, leading to lasting improvements in various areas of their lives.

While CBT incorporates a range of cognitive and behavioral techniques, it is not strictly defined by these strategies alone. Problem-solving is an integral part of CBT, drawing inspiration from different therapeutic modalities such as dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, Gestalt therapy, compassion-focused therapy, mindfulness, solution-focused therapy, motivational interviewing, positive psychology, interpersonal psychotherapy, and psychodynamic psychotherapy, particularly when addressing personality disorders.

CBT offers a comprehensive and adaptable approach to therapy, tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual. By integrating various techniques and incorporating evidence-based practices, CBT aims to empower individuals to make meaningful changes, improve their well-being, and develop effective coping strategies to navigate the challenges they face.

  • Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is a form of cognitive behavior therapy developed by Dr. Albert Ellis in 1955. REBT is an action-oriented approach that focuses on managing cognitive, emotional, and behavioral disturbances.

According to REBT, it is our thoughts about events, rather than the events themselves, that lead to emotional and behavioral distress. With a strong emphasis on the present, individuals are taught how to examine and challenge their unhelpful thinking patterns that contribute to unhealthy emotions and self-defeating behaviors.

REBT is a practical and goal-oriented approach that helps individuals cope with adversity, overcome challenges, and achieve their goals. It places a significant emphasis on the present moment. REBT addresses attitudes, unhealthy emotions (such as anger, depression, anxiety, guilt, etc.), and maladaptive behaviors (such as procrastination, addictive behaviors, aggression, unhealthy eating, sleep disturbance, etc.) that can negatively impact overall life satisfaction. REBT practitioners work closely with individuals to help identify their individual set of beliefs, attitudes, expectations, and personal rules that often lead to emotional distress.

REBT provides various methods to help individuals reevaluate and reformulate their dysfunctional beliefs into more sensible, realistic, and helpful ones. This is achieved through the powerful REBT technique called "disputing." Ultimately, REBT aims to help individuals develop a philosophy and approach to life that can increase their effectiveness and satisfaction in various domains, including work, relationships with others, parenting and education, community involvement, environmental well-being, and personal emotional health and overall well-being.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a leading mindfulness-based therapy that has proven results and applications in various fields. Its core principles encourage the cultivation of mindfulness, which involves being fully present and engaged in current activities while reducing the influence of unhelpful thoughts and emotions.

ACT emphasizes three key mindfulness skills:

Defusion: This involves distancing oneself from and letting go of unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, and memories.

Acceptance: ACT encourages the practice of embracing and accommodating painful feelings, urges, and sensations, allowing them to arise and fade away without struggling against them.

Present-moment contact: This skill involves immersing oneself fully in the present experience, approaching it with curiosity and openness.

ACT introduces the concept of the “observing self”, representing a part of oneself that observes both physical and thinking selves. It could be described as “pure awareness”; which is the aspect of consciousness that perceives thoughts, emotions, and sensory experiences.

ACT provides a unique and effective approach to behavioral change by integrating mindfulness, values orientation, and drawing on parallels with Buddhist philosophy while remaining secular. This therapy is firmly rooted in current research on human behavioral psychology, making it a progressive and scientifically supported practice.
